Katie and I decided to spend an afternoon in Old Town Alexandria…to our surprise the <a href=”http://www.ballyshaners.org”>Ballyshaners</a> 2008 Irish Festival was taking place! There were bagpipes, Irish dancers, beer, and quite a few local restaurants serving food out which made for quite a festive afternoon. Two tents that seemed just a tad out of place were the McCain and Obama tents. John McCain is unsurprisingly of Irish decent, but apparently <a href=”http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/blogs/sfgate/detail?blogid=14&entry_id=28878″>so is Barack Obama</a>. Every other tent seemed to be some sort of local Irish restaurant or organization and the political tents just seemed a bit odd.

Before we arrived at the shindig we saw quite a few people walking around Old Town with Obama and McCain stickers…by they time we got to the Obama tent all the stickers were gone…but Katie ponied up a couple bucks to get the button pictured. An afternoon that we thought might be a little boring proved to be pretty fruitful…and this was actually my first ever visit to Old Town…I’m kind of surprised myself since it’s right around the corner.?
