it seems like all the mapping sites including mapquest and livemaps is following suit at this time. i haven’t found any site that would route 66 inside the beltway. my guess is because of the liability involved with directing drivers the wrong direction; after incidents of gps devices navigating people at dead ends, train tracks, etc. then getting sued for it. they should at least have a check box that says “Restricted Route” defaulted to off. then when the user selects it, pop up a disclaimer before continuing with the restricted route.

Worked when I moved here in late feb 2010, noticed a few weeks ago it was broken. Grrr… Really wish they would fix this once in for all!

@Andrew – sometime in 2008 Google started allowing use of 66 inside the Beltway.

and then….
@Dale – sometime in late 2009, early 2010 they stopped allowing it!

STILL no option to use I-66 in Google Maps… it avoids it like the plague. VERY annoying. Mapquest and Live Maps have no trouble with it. What ever happened to “Don’t be evil”, Google?

I fought with MapQuest, and it appears that it, also hates I-66 as well as the Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Bridge, and tries to avoid them at all cost. I imagine they are worried that a lone driver might map a route that uses it, and try to follow the directions during HOV-time (and then demand that MapQuest pay the $80 ticket!). They need a checkbox under “Direction Options”, such as “Use HOV routes where possible”.

this is totally trus. i know this is late, but i had to google it since i cannot even drag my route onto 66 west from DC. really bizzarre! takes me out 50 or up GW pkwy to beltway then down and around. really annoying b/c i know i want to go out 66, just dont know where the exit is!

I live in the DC area and love using Google Maps but hate (I know Hate is a strong word) the fact that Google Map refuses to use I-66. So I just end up using Maps.Live.Com

I wish someone at Google maps would take note of this

I just received a Garmin C330 and going home from work last night it was doing everything possible to keep me off I-66 (Tysons to Arlington/Ballston). Once I got home, in the setup I found a checkbox that when unchecked allows carpool lanes. Unchecked it. This morning, it used I-66 to get me back to Tysons.

I believe it may also have something to do with the fact that trucks are not allowed inside the beltway on 66.
