Headstones

I pass this cemetery every day going to and from work in Winchester and it always catches my eye. This is part of Mt. Hebron Cemetery but this section appears just outside of the normal cemetery boundaries on the maps I’ve seen… I should check to see if this is actually a separate, adjacent cemetery. It reminds me of a mini Arlington National Cemetery.

Check out the trunk of the tree…it appears to have grown around the headstone that was closest to it.

To get to this location, I found a one lane gravel road that ran along a stone wall and behind four or five houses. I got out, took a few pictures, then drove a little further, lather, rinse, repeat. It was a one lane road and just as I was finishing a woman in a mini-van pulled in. I was completely in her way so I jumped in my car and backed into a driveway to let her threw. Well apparently I chose her driveway and she was looking a little annoyed….back off lady, I’m a phlogger.

Update: While driving to work today I checked out the gate to the cemetery – it read “U.S. National Cemetery”. I did some searching and found it on the Department of Veterans Affairs web site where it was named “Winchester National Cemetery” and was used primarily to bury soldiers during the Civil War. I even found another site where you can lookup the names of people buried Winchester National Cemetery. And here are some more photos including the gate I mentioned earlier. In this aerial photo of the cemetery you can see the gravel/dirt road that I referred to running along the right left side of the photo.
