Hate Mongering Not Goode
12/20/2006
The following letter written by Congressman Virgil Goode (R-VA) was first published in the C-Ville weekly in an article titled “Goode makes complete ass of self“. This letter was sent to a few hundred of Goode’s constituents after “Goode had received a flood of e-mails from constituents in response to newly elected Minnesota Representative Keith Ellison’s declaration that he would use the Koran, not the Bible, when being sworn into Congress next month.”
Dear Mr. Cruickshank:
Thank you for your recent communication. When I raise my hand to take the oath on Swearing In Day, I will have the Bible in my other hand. I do not subscribe to using the Koran in any way. The Muslim Representative from Minnesota was elected by the voters of that district and if American citizens don’t wake up and adopt the Virgil Goode position on immigration there will likely be many more Muslims elected to office and demanding the use of the Koran. We need to stop illegal immigration totally and reduce legal immigration and end the diversity visas policy pushed hard by President Clinton and allowing many persons from the Middle East to come to this country. I fear that in the next century we will have many more Muslims in the United States if we do not adopt the strict immigration policies that I believe are necessary to preserve the values and beliefs traditional to the United States of America and to prevent our resources from being swamped.
The Ten Commandments and “In God We Trust” are on the wall in my office. A Muslim student came by the office and asked why I did not have anything on my wall about the Koran. My response was clear, “As long as I have the honor of representing the citizens of the 5th District of Virginia in the United States House of Representatives, The Koran is not going to be on the wall of my office.” Thank you again for your email and thoughts.
Sincerely yours,
Virgil H. Goode, Jr.

First off, this letter implies that Keith Ellison is an immigrant from the middle east – this should not be an issue unless Ellison were running for President – guess what, he can run for President because he was born in the US! Ellison was born in Detroit, raised Catholic, and later became a Muslim while in college. He says he draws strength and moral courage from both Catholicism and Islam. From Ellison’s website, “I am inspired by the Qur’an’s message of an encompassing divine love, and a deep faith guides my life every day.” The word “Qur’an” (or Koran) could easily be replaced with the word “Bible” and its meaning would not change. Virgil, I bet you and Keith have more in common than you realize (value systems included!).
This letter makes me ashamed to be in the same state that this man represents. The United States came to be after immigrants left Europe so they could freely exercise the religion of their choice! Goode’s message is one of hatred and bigotry derived out of his own fears of a religion which he doesn’t know. The Bill of Rights does not have a list of approved religions, because it approves the peaceful practice of all religions, Islam included.
Goode says if we do not adopt his strict immigration policy that many more Muslims will enter this country and the “values and beliefs tradition to the United States” will not be preserved. This country was once known as a ‘melting pot’ where people of different backgrounds could coexist. Maybe that is idealist thinking, but shouldn’t we be aiming for an ideal situation instead of spreading fear and hatred?
